The history of this relationship goes back to the Upper Paleolithic, where humans first managed to domesticate another species, the canine. This domestication was simultaneous with man’s transition from predation to production. In Antiquity, the functions of dogs were linked to activities as diverse as combat, sled pulling in polar regions and the sacred rites of mythology. Later, the Roman Empire was a pioneer in dog breeding, which is why they were known as the homeland of a thousand dogs, suggesting the existence of a great diversity of dogs that were used as companion animals, to protect farms and flocks and, of course, for hunting.
